Featured Classic Cocktail: The Mai Tai

Mai Tai

Now that spring is finally here and summer approaches I have a taste for Tiki! The focus of Mai Tai Picthis month’s classic cocktail is the legendary Mai Tai. The name “Mai Tai” comes from the Tahitian word Maita’i which mean “good”.

This tasty concoction was invented in 1944 at the Trader Vic’s restaurant in Oakland, California. There are many different variations of this drink but the recipe featured here is the most common and my favorite. The blend of rums along with the Falernum and Curaçao lend to a rich and sweet yet complex flavor profit.  Meanwhile, the fresh lime juice counters the sweet, making the Mai Tai a perfect Tiki-themed cocktail.

1 ½ oz Bacardi Superior

¾ oz Pierre Ferrand Orange Curaçao

¾ oz Velvet Falernum

¾ Lime Juice

Topped with 1 oz. Gosling’s Black Seal Dark Rum

Shake all ingredients except the dark rum together in a Boston shaker with ice. Then strain over ice and float the dark rum on the top. Garnish and serve with straw
