Bitter Brew

Hop ConesBeer…
I get to write about beer. You get to read what I write about beer, lucky you.

I hope you will find this blog interesting and informative. I know I’m excited to explore the goings-on of the world of hops and barley.

Speaking of hops (did you see what I did there?) there’s been a lot of discussion about bitterness in beer and whether it’s a turn-off for most beer drinkers. As a hophead, this didn’t occur to me until I read this Slate article and then I went looking and saw bitterness and hops as threads in many beer forums.

I started to think about it. How hoppy is too hoppy? Maybe I’ve been doing my palate a disservice by sticking to the bitter brews. Maybe that’s why my friends bring their own beer.

I enjoy the bitter: grapefruit, Campari, Imperial IPA, these things make me happy. But balance is important. And hops can be like extreme sports: you need more and more to get the adrenaline going.

So I’ve decided to take a step back and explore the milder side of life. Let the malt come through in a Scotch Ale, enjoy a well-brewed Pilsner here and delicate Berliner Weiss there. Bitter does not mean better. I’ll let you know how it goes.
