As the largest alcoholic beverage wholesaler in Michigan, we take our role in environmental stewardship seriously. From our fleet of trucks to our facilities across the state, we are making strides to ensure that we are responsibly using, reducing, and recycling any materials we can. We’re proud to be a recipient of the Environmental Stewardship Award, presented by Orion Energy Systems, Inc. See our other awards.
Transportation is the largest contributor to our carbon footprint, so we are committed to making sustainable efforts to minimize the impact of our 160-truck fleet. We “dynamically route” (reducing miles driven) our fleet and we have high-efficiency transmissions in all trucks as well as automatic shut-off for vehicles that idle for more than three minutes. GLWAS is also transitioning to light weight vehicles. Specially designed fabric blankets are used for deliveries, substantially reducing our usage of shrink wrap during shipping.
In November of 2013 we introduced two CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) trucks to our fleet. While the CNG trucks have equivalent fuel usage as our diesel trucks, we expect an annual reduction of 14 tons of Greenhouse Gas Emissions for a 24.9% reduction over using diesel. If all goes well, we will be adding more of these to our fleet.
At our main office we have five electric car charging stations and allow use of the company Chevy Volt for office personnel.
Bayside Beverage, our Petoskey location is a 100% Recyclable Facility. There are no underground gas tanks, and no floor drains in the warehouse, ensuring safe groundwater. We maintain a 60,000-gallon water holding tank, which reduces our electricity usage, and is available to the local Bear Creek Fire department, as needed. Our property surrounding the facility, including two ponds, is left in its natural state to serve as a haven for local wildlife.
Our Detroit and Highland Park warehouses are where we store the bulk of our product. These facilities have been transitioned to E24 Powered Roller Conveyors. These are a long lasting, energy saving solution, and reduce energy consumption by as much as 60%. In addition, these facilities as well as the Bayside Beverage warehouse in Petoskey have been converted to energy efficient lighting fixtures, displacing a combined 2,412,348 kWh annually. The environmental impact of this is equivalent to planting 443 acres of trees annually and removing 1,468 tons of airborne pollutants annually!
