Featured Classic Cocktail – The Last Word

The Last Word cocktail was created in the early 1920s at the Detroit Athletic Club. This prohibition era cocktail was rediscovered in 2004 by Murray Stenson who was tending bar at the Zig Zag Cafe in Seattle. After its popularity exploded in the Pacific Northwest it slowly moved its way back home to Detroit. Currently, you can find many craft cocktail bars in Detroit serving up a proper Last Word. When crafting this cocktail I prefer using Detroit’s own Liberator gin because of its expressive citrus and cardamom notes. The botanicals from the Gin meld perfectly with the intense herbal quality of the Green Chartreuse. The Maraschino Liqueur adds sweetness while the lime juice counters with tart freshness to make this cocktail perfectly balanced.

The Last Word Classic Cocktail

  • ¾ oz Liberator Gin
  • ¾ oz Green Chartreuse
  • ¾ oz Maraschino Liqueur
  • ¾ oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • Maraschino Cherry

Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker, fill it with ice and shake vigorously. Then, double strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe and garnish with a maraschino cherry.
